Abstract

The surface roughness of a workpiece resulting from the cutting process will determine its quality, both in terms of function and appearance. Particularly for objects that will be paired and subjected to friction, surface roughness will determine the extent of friction that occurs. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of lathe parameters with variations in the main cutting angle (κr) and the chip angle (γ) of the tool on surface roughness and cutting force. The method used is a combination of experimental design and statistical analysis. The results of the study show that an increase in the value of the main cutting angle κr has an effect on reducing the cutting force. This is influenced by the value of the chip thickness (h) of the cutting result. The chip angle γo affects the speed of the cutting chip flow. The value of the chip angle will affect the orthogonal cutting angle of the tool (β). The main cutting angle κr affects the surface roughness of the workpiece. The smaller the value of the main cutting angle (κr), the greater the friction area between the cutting edge and the workpiece surface.
